Choosing a font for your comics

Unless you make a silent comic, you might need to choose a font for your comic. I've seen countless authors here on Tapastic use fonts that I thought were somewhat unfortunate or even dramatic, and it's true that finding the good one is tedious. Fonts convey subtle connotations, and so I thought I'd make a little sum up of some hints to help with this.

Different fonts: different emotional impact
Something to keep in mind with fonts is that they all have a specific purpose. Just imagine if you had to read a whole novel printed with Fish in the Bathroom... You'd probably 'nope' and flip the book in the trashbin. For comics, it's the same. You don't want to use a font that is:

  • hard to read
  • so catchy/weird that it will derail the attention from the story
  • doesn't match the atmosphere of your style and story (ie: a dynamic font like Anime Ace would fit for a story with a lot of action, but maybe not so well for something more emotive)
  • is Comic Sans. You know this font, everybody knows this font, graphic designers lament about it everyday. Still, if you really like it maybe you should take a look at Comic Neue, which is a remake with neat letters instead of wobbly glyphs.

Check every single character
An important step in choosing a font is to check it has all the characters you need and to make sure they all look good. Some fonts are very nice but there's this one letter that looks a bit strange or distracting. Or sometimes it's the punctuation that doesn't look good, with dots that are too small, or not spaced enough and turning into a flat line when juxtaposed, or it can be the exclamation mark looking almost like a l.
In the picture above are some fonts samples. Some are good, some turn out to be not so good for the aforementioned reasons.

If you found a font you like but don't know its name, you might be able to figure it out from a screenshot. Just upload it to the site What the Font and get instant results.
You can also easily create your own font on this site (thanks to littleendian for the link!) It took me less than one hour to create my first font ever. It might need some fixes but for a first try it's quite satisfying:

I created this font for my comic with www.myscriptfont.com/
It's a free and easy way to create fonts, just perfect for comic artists, I recommend it!

TES - Moth Priests
I made this picture for Skyrim's 2016 anniversary. These two are Elethir and Alastar, and their story was allowed some liberties from canon:

A Bosmer moth priest, Elethir turned blind on his first Elder Scroll reading. Having foreseen destruction brought to his temple by a young initiate, Alastar (and some inacceptable disorderly activities involving the both of them), Elethir decides not to speak word of his vision, in fear it might trigger its fulfillment. He instead sets for himself the mission to mentor Alastar when the novice joins the temple, in hope to set him on a more righteous path.

This story, co-written with ZikulArt was adapted into a comic, Consuming Darkness, and transposed in an original universe so to avoid copyright issues with Betheda (we all know how they are prone to suing!)
I think we managed to make a pretty cool world with just as much crazy lore. Suns are whales, people can become the equivalent of Daedra, Dreamsleeve-like realms are countless and many host remnant knowledge of long-gone civilizations, magic fishies will clean your soul when you die (unless you CHIM past that) and we've got a nice pantheon counting the god of making the doing, god of copy-pasting, god of fail, and a glitched moon, among other things.
If you'd like to read it you can click the picture below, or read for free on Tapastic.

Hi there!
This October, ghostly bills I was completely unaware of are popping from the past and I'm being required by a bailiff to pay the large sum of 705,99€. Quickly, if I want to avoid having to go to the tribunal and paying even more fees. This is the reason of this discount. It won't last more than two weeks!

Je viens de me rendre compte que je te watchais pas Oo J'en profite donc pour pallier à cette grossière erreur tout de suite !

J'espère que ta fin d'année se passe bien, au passage :) Bonnes fêtes à toi & Zikul !

Thank you! I actually did write many more books, but didn't get around finishing the v2 of the mod due to the updates of the CK constantly generating new bugs or changing the way certain things must be done in way to function. It's pretty frustrating. Still, all the books can be read here:

It's of course not the same as reading in-game, but at the moment it's all I have to offer.
